What Are Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB)?
Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) refers to a group of bacteria that produce lactic acid from the consumption and digestion of carbohydrates and sugars. When the lactid acid accumulates, they ferment the carbohydrate source (or pickle the food). LAB are used in the production of yogurt, kimchee, sauerkraut and many other nutritious, probiotic food sources.
In horticulture, adding LAB to your soil drenches effectively loosens and conditions your soil to help prevent anerobic conditions from arising. When used as a foliar spray, it has been shown to provide protection against fungal pathogens such as powdery mildew.
We encourage everyone to read more on the amazing product that is LAB and understand the process of making it. Learn more from this amazing publication and guide from the University of Hawaii on Natural Farming: Lactic Acid Bacteria

Benefits of LAB
Benefits of LAB
Lactic Acid Bacteria is used in natural farming as a way to aerate soils, encourage decomposition and enhance plant health and defenses.
Foliar:
When applied as a foliar, LAB can be effective at preventing negative fungal pathogens like powdery mildew.
LAB can be added to plant nutrient solutions like Fermented Plant Juice and applied as well.
We have found LAB helps us reduce the need for other foliar sprays that can be more damaging to beneficial members of the ecosystem.
Root Drench:
LAB can help at loosening and aerating soil to reduce anerobic pockets. It can accelerate the decomposition of organic top dresses/amendments and expedite the nutrient cycle for quicker bio-availability.
Seed Starter:
LAB along with other natural farming solutions can be applied to seeds to improve germination and deter fungal issues by inoculating the seed with beneficial microbes.

Application Rate:
In foliar and soil drench applications, LAB should be diluted to 1:1000 with non chlorinated water.
It is not recommended to use LAB late in flower as a foliar or root drench. LAB use should cease mid flower by week 4-5.
